L’accident which cost the lives of two people and seriously injured three others, Sunday November 3 2024, to of Val-d'Is (Ille-et-Vilaine) sparked a wave of reactions and emotion in the Pays de Vitré.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, several residents of the area particularly highlight the dangerousness of the intersection where the accident took place, crossing of the D794 and the D105.
“No visibility”
« This intersection is too dangerous, I use it morning and evening, it would be time to put in speed bumps and a roundabout,” calls out this resident on social networks. “I know this intersection well, no visibility», Points out another resident.
An observation that the mayor of Val-d'Izé, Bruno Delva saddened the day after the accident. “We especially think of the families of the victims,” he says in the preamble.
” It's a accident-prone intersectionwhich is located at the top of a hill, which means that the visibility is very reduced . »
Another fatal accident 15 years ago
The councilor also remembers that this same crossroads had cost the life of a motorcyclist living in his community, almost 15 years ago.
Mayor from 2001 to 2014 then re-elected in 2020, Bruno Delva explains that he has already worked on the subject:
We considered several roundabout solutions at this intersection. The plans exist, the idea has already been studied, but it was not retained because it was too difficult to implement.
The presence of homes near the intersection greatly limits the completion of this security work.
“These houses do not allow the establishment of a roundabout of the required diameter,” specifies the mayor of Val-d’Izé.
“We would need part of the two plots of land to create this roundabout, but the street would be closer to the homes. »
“We don’t have the financial means”
Another obstacle: cost. The creation of this roundabout would represent several hundred thousand euros investments for the municipality, with an annual operating budget of around 2 million euros.
“The two roads are departmental, but as the crossroads is located inside the urban area, the Department will consider that it is borne by the municipality. »
However, the municipality must assume other heavy investments. “The renovation of our sports complex, for example, represents 1 million euros for the town hall.We don't have the financial means to undertake such work in the short term. »
Developments carried out in the town
3,000 and 4,000 vehicleswould pass daily through this route, used in particular by motorists wishing to join the A84.
Developments had already been carried out between 2005 and 2007 to secure the town center of Val-d'Izé. But the entrance to the town is today the priority.
“We are fully aware of this problem at this intersection, but for the moment, no obvious solution has been offered to us,” laments Bruno Delva.
It remains to convince motorists to be extra vigilant when approaching Val-d'Izé.
