AMSTERDAM – Now that the big countdown has begun until the elections, Amsterdam artist Frankey – known for the large LEGO Hazes on Dam Square – is taking to the American streets to bring people from all political backgrounds together. In a larger-than-life bear suit that is half ‘Democratic blue’ and half ‘Republican red’, he walks through the American swing states to give bystanders a hug. At what is perhaps the most divisive time of the year for Americans – the election season – Frankey’s ‘Hug for Unity’ campaign calls for people to come closer together, spread optimism and embrace the power of connection.

Completely in guerrilla style, he walks through the streets of the crucial swing states, ready to embrace everyone – regardless of political preference – for a warm hug. All this is part of the ‘Hug for Unity’ campaign, an initiative of the artist himself and Alvarez Gallery from Connecticut. The campaign is intended to brighten up the world and bring solidarity. Bystanders can not only get a hug, but also support the campaign and further spread the message with their own ‘Hug for Unity’ merchandise. There are sweaters, T-shirts, caps and bags to encourage you to cuddle.

“The goal is to bridge differences and connect, especially in times of division,” says Frankey. “A hug may seem simple, but it symbolizes a willingness to be open to the other.”

Alvarez Gallery sees Frankey as the perfect artist for this campaign: “What makes Frankey so great is not only his talent for making people laugh, but also his ability to find joy in unexpected situations,” said Fernando Luis Alvarez, founder of Alvarez Gallery.
