Towards the end of the race, the sprint in Sao Paulo suddenly became exciting again. After repeated attacks, world champion Max Verstappen finally got past third-placed Charles Leclerc on the 18th of 24 laps and was able to hunt down the two McLarens at the front.
Almost immediately after Verstappen’s successful maneuver, they made a tactically clever decision: Leader Oscar Piastri let Lando Norris, who was better ranked in the World Cup, pass and thus “gifted” his teammate the first sprint victory of his career.
Double safety car trouble for Verstappen
Shortly after castling at the front, Verstappen’s race to catch up was slowed by a virtual safety car phase. Nico Hülkenberg’s Haas car had to be transported off the track due to a defect. The race was only reopened for the last lap, in which Verstappen could not get past Piastri and crossed the finish line in 3rd place.
However, this subsequently resulted in 4th place. The defending champion was given a 5-second penalty because he pressed the accelerator too quickly during the restart after the safety phase. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) inherited third place.
Before the GP on Sunday, Verstappen is only 44 points ahead of Norris.
