The online gaming grand final League of Legends was broadcast live for the first time at Soler this Saturday, November 2, 2024. A first in the department which allowed fans to experience this major e-sport event, in a group, in an immersive and friendly setting.
This is a first in the Pyrénées-Orientales which has the merit of calling attention to itself. And ask a few questions. At least for people who are no longer 20 or 30 years old. Why on earth would people gather in a dark room to watch other people play video games? A Saturday afternoon at that! Why not do this from home, on a Sunday for example? To understand – and not die stupid – it was to Soler that you had to go this Saturday, November 2, 2024. This is where the grand world final of online gaming League of Legends (LOL for fans, Editor's note) was broadcast live at the Espace François Calvet. A good hundred people specially made the trip to attend the event which took place live from the O2 Arena in London. The hall with a capacity of 23,000 seats was packed. This shows the scale of the e-sport event…
Competition
Ranked among the most popular games in the world, League of Legends has more than 100 million players around the world. It is a strategy game in which two teams of five champions compete to destroy the opposing base. This Saturday for the grand final, the South Korean title holders faced the Chinese champions. The opening ceremony had nothing to envy of those of the World Cup or the halftime show of the Super Bowl. And it seems that she won over the Catalan gamers that afternoon.
As the players enter the stage, the François Calvet space quivers. The show promises to be entertaining and will last several hours. In the fourth row, Léo, a fan of the game, wanted to live the experience in situ “to share a friendly moment together”. “We watched them so much alone behind our PCs that it’s nice to be able to get together among players”adds the young Perpignan resident.
It's a bit like going to watch a football final in a stadium or in a bar.
For Thomas Coignard, director of the Media Action Center and leader of the initiative, this first in the P.-O. is a success. “Frankly, we weren't expecting so many people. The idea was to bring together LOL players in the same place so that they could experience a final, often very spectacular, together, in an immersive environment. is a bit like going to watch a football or rugby final in a stadium, in a bar. Here, there are the same sensations when there are great actions, there is shouting, there is applause…”.he argued before adding that other events of this kind could emerge in the department.
Alongside the final, two masterclasses were led by Maxime Galland, an IDEM professor who revealed the stages of creating a video game and “iReaz”, an influencer specializing in League Of Legends to 40,000 subscribers on YouTube. At the exit of the François Calvet space, as in any self-respecting competition, a third half was planned at the MyBeers bar to debrief the game.
