The Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency has received a report of a probable case of botulism, according to AFP information relayed by BFMTV on Friday November 1. The Isère prefecture has ordered the recall of a few dozen artisanal cans of pork terrine.

In Isère, a few dozen artisanal cans of pork terrine were recalled or withdrawn from sale by the prefecture after the report of a probable case of botulism in a person who had consumed it, according to AFP information relayed by BFMTV Friday October 1. Botulism, fatal in 5 to 10% of cases, is a rare and serious neurological condition. It is caused by a toxin produced by bacteria that grows in poorly stored foods.

Thursday October 31, the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency (ARS) received the report of a case suspected of being affected by this condition, indicates the Isère prefecture in a press release. “The national reference center for botulism, at the Pasteur Institute, carried out an analysis of the remains of the implicated pork terrine, and confirmed the presence of botulinum toxin and the bacteria producing the toxin”she also explains. It also specifies that the person who has “consumed a pork terrine produced on the farm, by the EARL (Limited Responsibility Agricultural Operation, editor's note) Les Peupliers, in Le Mottier” has been “medical care”.

See a doctor if you have symptoms

Finally, the prefecture calls on people who have cans of this pork terrine not to consume them or open them and to throw them away. She also recommends “people who have consumed these products should exercise the greatest vigilance and consult a doctor in the event of symptoms” such as vision problems, difficulty swallowing or speaking, or dry mouth.
