New film by Alain Guiraudie, “Miséricorde” is one of the major releases of this week in October. What did viewers think of this thriller? Verdict.

Four years after Viens je t’emmène, Alain Guiraudie returns to the toxic and twisted thriller with Miséricorde. It recounts the return of Jérémie (Félix Kysyl) to the village of Saint-Martial after the death of his former boss. Very quickly, his presence establishes a climate of mistrust and unearths previously buried secrets.

The film, also carried by Catherine Frot in a troubled role, is reminiscent of the tone of The Stranger in the Lake, one of its director’s most important successes. In 2014, his feature film was nominated eight times for the César.

On AlloCiné, Miséricorde obtains a press rating of 3.9 out of 5 and an average spectator rating of 3.7 out of 5*. This is the highest rated film in Alain Guiraudie’s filmography. What did viewers think of this thriller? A look at the reviews.

They liked

According to Chris G. (5 out of 5): “Guiraudie has a singular, extremely intelligent writing talent. We are captivated at every moment by trajectories and twists as unexpected as they are exciting, he manages to link thriller, offbeat comedy, and existential reflections.”

According to Charles-Louis P. (5 out of 5): “I really liked the interpretation of Monsieur le Curé and Jérémie, and the photography and Catherine Frot. It’s funny and sweet but above all funny because there is still violence. I keep wondering if the Giroles are a reference to Alain Guiraudie.”

According to Pokémon (5 out of 5): “Autumn, mushroom picking, the pastis that we cannot refuse, the desires, the bread, the priest, those who stay longer than necessary, the absurd and the beauty at the same time. A surprising and brilliant film. We discover Félix Kysyl who has the magnetic gift of absorbing all our glances. A nugget.

According to Eddie W. (4.5 out of 5): “A masterpiece, nothing more, nothing less. A pure dream of a film. (And a priest’s role like we’ve never seen in the cinema!) The quintessence of Guiraudie’s cinema, in its more classic side (come on, I’m taking you away which is the shaggier but also brilliant side).

According to Gregory S (4 out of 5): “In my opinion, Guiraudie’s best film or especially the most popular film for the general public. To see for the atmosphere, the suspense, the main and secondary characters all well written, and an incredible scene rarely seen in the cinema but impossible to talk about. In any case, all the spectators were very surprised.

According to Gaelle P. (4 out of 5): “Confusing, uncomfortable film, bordering on the absurd and led by majestic actors. Morals are distorted and called into question on different aspects which makes the film surprising, funny and disturbing..”

They didn’t like

According to Audrey_Lenis (1 out of 5): “What can I say…a film without tail (well, yes, 2) or head! Like the first minutes capturing in mobile phone quality a road through the dirty window of the vehicle, the film is a soup of boredom, of sloppy script (AI?) leaving a vague nausea.

I give one star instead of zero because the actors are good but the score is porous. Ugly, dirty, random, but poorly done. I hated it.

According to Pierre Astier (0.5 out of 5): “Amazing the stars given to this film! I haven’t seen such a bad movie in a long time. Poorly acted, stupid storyline, endless boredom. As soon as the word end appears, we tell ourselves that we have lost two hours of our life. Don’t waste your time.
