The upcoming time change is not far away: the clock will be turned again in October. But a country in Europe will do this for the last time.

Munich – Some like it, others don’t: the time change from summer to winter time is imminent. In autumn, the adjustment takes place at the end of October every year. But one country in Europe is now fed up with this – also for health reasons for its citizens.

Time change abolished: Country in Europe turns the clock for the last time in October

Basically, the clock is adjusted twice a year. In March the time goes forward by one hour and in October it goes back by one hour. This year, the time change from summer to winter time will take place on October 27, 2024. The hand will then jump from three to two o’clock. This means you can sleep an hour longer. Some clocks change automatically.

Simple reminder: Will the clock go forward or back in October?

A mnemonic makes it easy to remember whether the clock goes forward or back in October. In summer the garden furniture is put outside the door. Accordingly, the time will be turned forward in March. In winter, however, the garden furniture is brought back into the house, which is why the clock is also reset.

After a change in the law in July, Ukraine wants to permanently maintain winter time – also known as standard time or Central European Time. This means that the change to daylight saving time will be abolished on March 30, 2025. Ukraine’s decision has various reasons.

On the one hand, the time change leads to changes in people’s biorhythms, which has a negative impact on their physical and psychological state, the agency said Interfax in the summer, citing representatives of the Verkhovna Rada. “After changing the hour hands, citizens feel worse, their ability to work decreases, and a significant deterioration in chronic diseases is observed,” the justification for the law said.

Ukraine ends the time change – other countries no longer change their clocks either

Furthermore, no energy savings were found with daylight saving time. Many EU member states had introduced time changes in the past in order to save energy and make better use of daylight. Today, however, it is controversial whether this was really worth it.

Ukraine’s decision was also justified by its demarcation from war enemy Russia. “Therefore, the introduction and establishment of a uniform Kiev time throughout Ukraine will in turn strengthen Ukraine’s security position and contribute to the evacuation and reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories,” it said. Previously, Ukrainian summer time from the end of March to the end of October coincided with the year-round Moscow time.

It has long been discussed whether the twice-yearly time change should be abolished. Years ago, the EU Commission proposed retaining the summer time regulation. However, this decision is up to the individual member states. For example, there are no longer any time changes in Iceland and Greenland. Brazil, Turkey, Egypt and Namibia also abolished seasonal change years ago. Some countries such as Afghanistan, Indonesia or Thailand have never turned the clock.
