Filmmaker Cullen Hoback has just caused a sensation by releasing his documentary for HBO: he claims to reveal the true identity of the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin (BTC).

According to Money Electric: the mystery of Bitcoin, that would be Peter Todda Canadian programmer. The bomb exploded and the Internet went into flames after discovering the news during the broadcast of the documentary on Tuesday evening.

Quite a surprise for cryptography specialists. On a betting site, names had surfaced to discover the crypto oracle. The Polymarket site lists names such as Adam Back, Nick Szabo, Hal Finney, David Kleinman, Len Sassaman. But Peter Todd wasn’t even mentioned in the list.

However, Cullen Hoback surprised the entire crypto world with this Canadian. No one had bet a kopeck on this man.

To support the investigation, the film reinforces its argument with a solid clue: an exchange on a Bitcoin forum in 2010. Generally speaking, Todd responded to a message from Nakamoto in a way that seemed to extend the mysterious creator’s stream of thoughts. Conclusion: The Canadian would have made the wrong account and in the process, the accounts of Todd and Nakamoto disappeared.

Once confronted with the various clues compiled, Peter Todd began to lose his Latin in front of the production cameras. He calls these claims “ridiculous” and directly mocks Hoback’s investigation.

Hoback himself presents his version to New York Timessaying he gave Todd several chances to challenge that version. But he stuttered.

“Not only does he not answer the question, he is at a loss for words. Peter is never at a loss for words. »

Cullen Hoback au New York Times.

Todd has continued to defend the idea that this clue discovered on the forum is only a “coincidence”.

Keep the mystery for a good reason

Satoshi Nakamoto’s secret identity also hides a digital trove of over a million Bitcoins, or about 5% of the total supply. Currently, this is equivalent to around 60 billion francs.

As a reminder, the majority of Satoshi’s loot has never been touched in several years. Theoretically, he (the incumbent) would be around 25th place among the world’s greatest fortunes. According to the specialized press, Satoshi has an essentially liquid fortune. It is therefore possible for him to withdraw everything and cause the price of BTC to fall. Such action would have devastating effects on the cryptocurrency market.

But revealing Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity could also put him in danger. In fact, he has lived anonymously for many years. Todd also told CNN that Hoback’s work was “irresponsible” and could cause big problems for many people.

Money Electric: the mystery of Bitcoin therefore reveals a new lead, yet another, which could end in a flop like the magazine’s investigation News week in 2014 – which wrongly targeted a man named Nakamoto.

Is the HBO documentary also a failure? This is what many critical voices think. The hypothesis that Todd, aged just 23, could have programmed such a complex cryptocurrency system does not hold water for cryptocurrency enthusiasts. While others are convinced that a single person is not capable of having designed such a complete and powerful system. The mystery remains.

Watson: You are one of the women who have a predisposition to breast cancer. Were you dreading this announcement?
Sophie Hoffmann : This genetic malformation concerns the breast, but also the ovary. My mother and her three sisters were all affected by one or the other. I knew I had the mutation at age 29, requiring an MRI, ultrasound and mammogram every year. Exams I completed with limited stress. We tell ourselves that everything is fine, despite the presence of the mutation. At that time, with my partner Damien, we were on a journey of medically assisted procreation, since he himself had lymphatic cancer at the age of 19, which affected his fertility.
