“Lee Miller”, portrait of a female fighter photographer

Known for her work as director of photography with directors Michel Gondry and Martin Scorsese, Ellen Kuras directs, with Lee Millerhis first feature film. Kate Winslet plays the role of this courageous woman who goes from model to war reporter. The actress also invested financially to ensure that this beneficial project saw the light of day. We also find in the credits the French actresses Marion Cotillard and Noémie Merlant.

History

Model in New York, muse, lover and collaborator of Man Ray in , Lee Miller became a war reporter after the 1944 landings for the magazine Vogue English. It will cover the end of the conflict, from the liberation of Saint-Malo to the fall of Berlin, including the terrible discovery of the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps. The film traces this part of his life.

We love…

Lee Miller deserved a biopic. Here is a woman who broke the codes of the time, defying prohibitions to fulfill her destiny. Kate Winslet plays this role of heroine determinedly determined by her desire to be useful, to show the world. Through perseverance, she was able to force the army to accept her like other male journalists. (Note that an exhibition of 54 photographs by Lee Miller is visible until November 3, Chapelle de la Victoire, rue de la Victoire in Saint-Malo intramural).

We like less…

The film obviously did not have all the means to achieve these ambitions. This sometimes shows on screen. The jeep of Lee Miller and his sidekick David Sherman is sometimes a little lonely on the roads of the German debacle. The flashback process with the son is also a bit classic. This film is worth above all for the portrait and the touching interpretation of Kate Winslet.
