War in the Middle Eastdossier

Message from the Israeli writer to his late parents on the trauma of October 7 and his hope to see the fall of the Netanyahu government responsible for the implications of a war spreading to Lebanon.

Hi mom,

It’s been five years since you died, and I’m only writing to you now. Sorry it took so long, but I was waiting for some good news to share with you, and it was slow in coming. I could have written to you about Covid-19 or about the messianic right-wing government formed by Benjamin Netanyahu, which you never supported. I could have written to you about the terrible massacre that took place here on October 7, the hundreds of hostages who are in Gaza and how this same Netanyahu seems to be ruining any negotiation, just to continue this accursed war indefinitely.

I could have told you about Alex, the bearded historian who participated with me in the documentary film on Polish television, about whom you said that he was a man, a «mensch»I could have tell you how he was taken from the house where he had welcomed me during filming. And how he died in Gaza after Netanyahu refused to compromise and accept the release of old men instead of women. Or talk to you again about the retirees, women and men, whom we would surely have met while queuing at the dispensary, if you had remained alive; tell you how they were arrested and handcuffed with violence, like dangerous criminals, by Ben Gvir’s fascist police, for daring to remind us that the release of hostages is part of the orders
