By 48 votes “against” and 12 votes “for”, the elected representatives of the Community of Communes of Matheysine (CCM) decided this September 4 in the evening in an assembly, not to relaunch an interested management delegation with the company Sata for two seasons concerning Alpe du Grand Serre. Which effectively signals the shutdown of the ski resort for which the community is responsible. The cumulative deficits have become too heavy for the finances and the community of municipalities has not received as much ringing and stumbling support, nor as quickly, as it hoped for its “four season” reconversion project, which requires heavy investments.
Operation under community perfusion since 2017
On France Bleu Isère, Coraline Saurat, president of the CCM, Community of communes of Matheysine, explains that it is a “difficult” decision but one that had to be taken. “Since 2017 the community of municipalities has been at the bedside of the station, with an assumption of competence in 2021, and since 2017 2 million 779 thousand euros have been put into operation […] and the impact of committing to two additional years was considerable without any future prospects“.
A “four seasons” reconversion plan that is insufficiently supported?
The Community of Communes of Matheysine has tried to outline the future through a relatively heavy investment plan which would have allowed a change, a reconversion, of the Alpe du Grand Serre ski lifts into a “four seasons” system. allowing both skiing and mountain biking as well as approaches for more distant hikes. A plan impossible to implement and for which the support of the State, among others, was not up to par or was slow to materialize. Today “the State does not support us concretely on the future of the station nor on transitional operation” explains the chosen one.

And now to Alpe du Grand Serre?
On the Alpe du Grand Serre site, however, there remains a landscape, an environment, professionals and possible activities. Which ones? Coraline Saurat invites us, after digesting the news, to sit around a table. Communities in particular, community of communes, department, region, state, for first of all “reach out to the people and families most impacted in the region“, in order to “think about the future and think about it differently and consider concrete, long-term developments to maintain activity in the Roizonne valley and Alpe du Grand Serre.
