Julian Alaphilippe: violent fall during the cycling world championships, the rider forced to abandon

This Sunday, September 29, 2024, a new edition of the cycling world championships took place in Switzerland. An unfortunate race for Julian Alaphilippe who violently fell, forcing the runner to abandon.

The cycling world championships are always an unmissable event for runners and cycling fans. And of course, a Frenchman was particularly expected at the turn: Julian Alaphilippe. This Sunday, September 29, 2024, a new stage took place in Switzerland, in Zurich, but this did not go at all as planned for Marion Rousse’s companion. The French team, well led by Thomas Voeckler, was present in the competition with several assets to try to achieve victory. But the race took another turn with a big fall at the back of the peloton, proof if any were needed that nothing is ever written in this event. Unfortunately, among the victims of this fall was Julian Alaphilippe, double world champion in 2020 and 2021. With 222 km left to go, the accident caused a dislocation of his shoulder.

A new fall for Julian Alaphilippe

Following his state of health, the father had no choice but to give up. After receiving treatment and discussing with his coach, Marion Rousse’s companion had to leave the race in an ambulance. A few minutes after this fall, it was his racing comrade Thomas Voeckler who gave his news from his car in the race: “His shoulder was put back in place. I spoke to Julian on the phone, only the shoulder is affected. He is morally devastated.” A real blow for the French as well as for the champion who hoped to once again demonstrate his talent by reaching first place on the podium, especially since he said a lot about himself “in better shape than at the Olympics”, where he managed to get eleventh place. This is not the first time this year that Julian Alaphilippe has retired due to a fall. On March 2, 2024, he withdrew after falling during the Strade Bianche.
