French tennis finally has its new hope in the person of Arthur Fils. At only 20 years old, the young player from Courcouronnes continues to climb the ranks of the ATP circuit. After his third coronation in Tokyo, he is now ranked 21st in the world, raising colossal expectations among fans and observers of this sport. According to Mats Wilander, former world tennis glory, Son could reach the top of the rankings within a few years and join the prestigious Top 5. The hopes placed on Son’s shoulders are high. But before seeing him reach the heights, some readjustments are necessary according to former world No. 1, Mats Wilander: “He needs to have a slightly more assertive playing identity. He is so constant in managing his emotions, a bit like Sinner and Alcaraz,” declares the consultant for Eurosport. If a long way still separates the French player from the two other players of the new generation, Carlos Alcaraz (21 years old) and Jannick Sinner (23 years old), this gap could narrow in the future. “I really think he’s a Top 5 potential. It’s not necessarily going to come in two, three, or four years because he needs to develop his game a little bit more,” estimates the Swede before concluding. “I’m going to start dreaming: we already had Alcaraz and Sinner, and now we have Arthur Fils. By 2028 or 2029, he will be in the Top 5 and contender for the Grand Slam title”, expresses Wilander, whose future will tell him whether he was right or wrong about the hopes placed on the young French player.
