It is quite an honor for the Japan Film Festival to present to you these 5 well-known Quebec personalities, who have agreed to play the game and view with a critical eye the flagship films of the official selection.
Why a Jury?
On the one hand, to highlight Quebecers’ appreciation of Japanese culture, then on the other hand to give a boost to the artists and artisans of Japanese cinema, for whom recognition abroad is a springboard on the market Japanese, otherwise very saturated. Montreal is even more dear to the hearts of the Japanese because it is here that many actresses, actors and directors have been recognized.
We remember the film Departures (Okuribito, by Yôjirô Takita, with Masahiro Motoki) whose victory in Montreal was reported as an “achievement” in Japan. The film was a huge success at the box office, exceeding 6 billion yen in revenue, placing it at the heart of the spotlight to finally win the Oscar for best foreign language film. Why no Japanese on the Jury? The question answers itself: why present your work abroad if it is to be judged by people from your own country?
Our Jury is made up of a renowned film critic, two extraordinary actors and actresses, a renowned director and a talented director of photography. Some have worked in Japan, others not, all are movie buffs!
