a union suggests the establishment of a distance bonus

“To compensate for the shortage of teachers in Matam and other regions, we propose to the government of Senegal to allocate a special remoteness allowance for teachers who agree to serve in remote locations such as Matam, Sédhiou, Tambacounda , Kolda, Kédougou and Ziguinchor,” he said.

Such a measure would allow the authorities to cope with their “massive departure”, year after year, of teachers working in these areas, he added in an interview with journalists, at the end of a union tour that he directs in the Matam region.

According to Mbaye Sarr, remote regions of the country are strongly impacted by the massive departure of teachers each year, at the end of the work of the national transfer commission. A situation which, he says, “affects the teaching and learning”.
Also, the Autonomous Union for the Development of Education and Training recommends “bold measures” with a view to remedying this situation and establishing teachers in these remote areas.

The Matam region, in particular, is faced with this phenomenon resulting in a shortage of teachers which has led to the closure of many classes in the region, he noted.

This situation pushed school officials to concentrate students in other rooms in the double-stream class format, reported the secretary general of the Autonomous Union for the Development of Education and Training.

“This method does not promote quality teaching. From this point of view, we draw the attention of the authorities so that bold measures are taken to stem this phenomenon,” said the trade unionist.

“We also noticed that many schools are deprived of budgets. Since 2017, schools can no longer operate without a budget. Those which had initially been allocated to schools were suspended for reasons that we do not know,” lamented Mbaye Sarr.
