The fortune of billionaires in Switzerland has increased by $70.8 billion since 2019, the equivalent of $39 million per day, Solidar Suisse said in a press release on Monday. The NGO partnered with Oxfam to produce a report on inequalities.

Globally, the fortunes of billionaires increased in 2024 by $2 trillion, three times faster than the previous year. This while 3.5 billion people continue to live below the poverty line, on less than $6.85 per day.

This inequality is facilitated by a concentration of economic power in the hands of a few elected officials, deplores Solidar Suisse. The NGO is concerned about the influence of the richest on democracies. “Donald Trump, inaugurated today in Washington, embodies this dangerous correlation between political and economic powers,” she writes.

Solidar Suisse calls for an end to this hegemony by removing tax benefits for the richest and encouraging decent salaries and dignified working conditions. The organization further believes that the UN should lead global tax policy.
