Samsung is reportedly preparing a major innovation for its connected watches. According to an analysis of the code of the SmartThings application (version 1.3.12.9), a new “Pointer Mode” would allow Samsung televisions to be controlled using simple hand and wrist gestures.
The SmartThings application code has just revealed that Galaxy Watches should soon be able to control Samsung TVs, with simple movements. This feature, also spotted during CES 2025 in Las Vegas, would transform the Galaxy Watch into a sophisticated virtual remote control. The system would activate by shaking the wrist and would offer a wide range of gesture controls.

Galaxy Watches as a remote control for Samsung TVs?
To use this Pointer Mode, users will have to disable existing gesture controls and the function “ Universal Gesture “. This new feature is distinct from the Wiimote-style virtual remote control project planned for smartphones later this year.
The demonstration at CES suggests imminent deploymentprobably synchronized with the launch of the Samsung 2025 TV range. However, compatibility with older TV models remains to be confirmed.
Samsung is likely aiming to strengthen its connected ecosystem with such a feature. It would offer a practical alternative to the traditional remote control, particularly useful when it is out of reach or misplaced. If Pointer Mode comes to fruition, it could represent a significant competitive advantage for Samsung in the connected watch marketno other manufacturer currently offers such gesture control functionality for televisions.
