Coop and Migros introduced a new functionality to their self-service scales at the start of the year. When weighing fruit and vegetables, it is now necessary to indicate the type of packaging used: unwrapped, plastic bag, paper or textile bag. This change responds to new legal requirements prohibiting the inclusion of the weight of the packaging in that of the weighed products. According to the brands, this measure makes weighing more transparent and allows customers to save money, because only the net weight of the food is billed.

While distributors assure that it is a simple and intuitive process, some customers express their dissatisfaction on social networks, describing this change as tedious. “Indicating the packaging for a simple banana is useless,” says a Coop customer.

Despite this, the two orange giants defend the initiative, saying that the transition is part of an approach to sustainability and regulatory compliance. Prices remain unchanged regardless of the packaging selected, as confirmed by tests carried out in store: 110 grams of kumquat cost 1.65 francs at the Coop, regardless of the packaging selected.
