Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop supporting several older Android devices, marking the end of an era for smartphones released more than a decade ago.
Here's what we know
This decision was made due to the evolution of technology and the need to adapt the application to new functionalities.
The main reason for this decision is the continuous improvement of WhatsApp. While the app incorporates new features, including Meta AI, which allows users to ask questions, generate images and create content directly within the app, support for older versions of Android has become problematic. In particular, devices running Android KitKat (version 4.4, released in 2013) will no longer have access to WhatsApp services.

List of devices that will no longer be supported
- Samsung : Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini (2013)
- Motorola : Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
- HTC : One X, One X Plus, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG : Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony : Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
These models were released between 2012 and 2014 and are now considered outdated for WhatsApp purposes. Although the app remains installed on devices, users will not be able to connect to Meta's servers, rendering WhatsApp unusable.
The move highlights the importance of updating devices to access the latest features. Users of older phones should consider upgrading to newer Android models to continue enjoying WhatsApp and other modern apps without interruption.
