With an Xbox Series S deliberately less powerful than the Xbox Series X, many studios have already complained of feeling held back by the limitations of this console in the past. It must be said that unlike her big sister, and therefore her opponents from home Sony4K is still not on the program while its raw impact proves to be well below (the famous teraflops for example, numbering 4 compared to 12.5 for the Series X). But for Ievgen Grygorovych, the director of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 chez GSC Game Worldit's not that much of a problem as he admits during a recent interview with Tech4Gamers.
When it was released, STALKER 2 got a bit of a slap on the wrist for major performance problems, something that was quickly corrected by an update. Tech4Gamers took the opportunity to ask Ievgen Grygorovych why such problems had arisen and how the Ukrainian studio managed optimization on the different platforms, “especially on Xbox Series S”.
First of all, the Xbox offers a huge advantage over the PC: a consistent hardware configuration for all players. You have to take advantage of it by fully understanding this hardware. Even simple adjustments can result in significant performance improvements.
An opinion which contrasts drastically with many of his colleagues: for him, it is simply enough to understand the Xbox Series S to adapt to it, but the technical limitation of the machine is perfectly manageable. He must nevertheless admit that he and his team were supported by Microsoft himself, who gave serious help during the gestation to tame the consoles. “Our most productive collaboration was when they visited our office to test, profile and troubleshoot the game, helping us explore solutions”says Grygorovych. Very beneficial assistance which allowed developers to better concentrate on optimizing STALKER 2… A real message of hope to other studios for whom the Xbox Series S remains problematic?
