8K, we talk about it a lot, but we see little of it. The fault is the absence of content available in this format four times more defined than UHD 4K. But the 8K Association, which brings together manufacturers in the image field, is pushing for the development of 8K projects and products. It has just certified for the first time a consumer video projector, the Samsung The Premiere 8K.
8K in video projection
8K is the demonstration of the know-how of those involved in the world of creation, capture, broadcasting and display in the best that could be achieved today in terms of video quality. They are brought together within the 8K Association. However, it comes up against a reality: no film is released on 8K media, nor on disc – because 8K Blu-ray is not planned – nor in streaming on the different platforms. On the other hand, television channels take advantage of major global sporting events to capture these images in 8K and make them available via specific broadcast channels, not always intended for the general public.
However, there have been 8K televisions for several years, ready for the future. In the field of video projection, only the high-end DLA-NZ models from JVC currently offer 8K. The Samsung The Premiere 8K, presented two years ago at the CES show in Las Vegas in prototype form, foreshadowed the arrival of this very high definition in a more general public format. Unfortunately, it is still not commercially available. But close to being, it has just been certified by the 8K Association, which puts it back in the spotlight. Please note that there are professional 8K video projectors, from Digital Projection for example.
Samsung ultra short throw video projection in 8K
The Samsung The Premiere 8K complements the existing premium 4K laser models The Premiere 7 and The Premiere 9. These are also ultra short throw video projectors. The 8K model goes to the higher resolution thanks to its 7680 x 4320 pixels. It also offers a more luxurious design with chrome edges as well as side and upper panels covered with thin wooden slats when models 7 and 9 are made of simple white plastic.
In the absence of 8K content, the presence of an upscaling processor makes it possible to scale lower definitions in order to fill all the pixels as precisely as possible. Videos in FHD or 4K will then be magnified, including the presence of HDR. With an announced brightness of 4500 ISO lumens, the Samsung The Premiere 8K is located at the top of the basket of ultra short throw video projectors and can be used even during the day. Finally, the audio part is reproduced by an integrated soundbar compatible with immersive sound. It gains the Sound-on-Screen function to reassemble the audio scene to give the impression that the sound comes from the image and not the video projector.
We are waiting for more information on the full specifications of this device. We imagine it will benefit from the Tizen on-screen interface, providing access to multiple video streaming applications. The Samsung The Premiere 9 model is sold at a price of €5,700. So what will the price of The Premiere 8K version be? It's still a mystery…
