ChatGPT arrives on WhatsApp, without the need for an internet connection

OpenAI makes its famous chatbot, ChatGPT, even more accessible. Now users can interact with ChatGPT via WhatsApp or a dedicated phone line, even offline.

ChatGPT takes a new step in its accessibility. OpenAI is launching two features: a messaging service that allows you to chat with AI on WhatsApp, and a telephone line. With these new features, the company shows its ambition to make ChatGPT a universal tool, available everywhere, even without an internet connection.

OpenAI launches a toll-free phone line in the United States: 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478). This service works with any type of phone, including classic models. Users get 15 free minutes to interact with ChatGPTwith the possibility of extending their session by logging into their account. Enough to offer an interesting alternative to areas without internet connection.

OpenAI also announces the availability of ChatGPT on WhatsApp by text exchanges, always adding the number 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to their contacts. However, this version does not support voice mode or visuals, but retains the intelligence of the o1-mini model. The service is available in all countries where OpenAI offers its chatbot, without requiring an account first. The company is, however, working on an option to allow users to log into their accounts via WhatsApp. No precise date has yet been given on this subject. Note that Meta, owner of WhatsApp, already offers its own chatbot on the platform.

By diversifying its supports, OpenAI seeks to reduce technical barriers, whether it be unstable connections or the need for user accounts. During the livestream, which you can watch above, Kevin Weil, the company’s product director, said these initiatives mark the start of a broader strategy aimed at making ChatGPT accessible to as many people as possible. Other recent OpenAI announcements include making ChatGPT Search free for all users and making Sora, its video generation tool, publicly available.
