INSEE has revealed the demographic data finalized at the end of 2022 in . The Ain department has experienced a significant increase in its population, one of the strongest in France.

The Ain department is popular!

It is probably not for nothing that it was recently elected the French people’s favorite department.

And the latest figures from INSEE on the number of inhabitants in France, published this Thursday, December 19, confirm this.

The sharply increasing population in Ain

Ain is one of the departments in the region with the highest population growth between 2016 and 2022, with 671.289 habitantsa gain of 5,477 inhabitants.

It’s simply the eleventh largest increase in France. A growth which can be explained by its proximity to the cities of and Geneva (Switzerland).

The first city in the department in terms of demographics is Bourg-en-Bresse : she counts 42.065 habitants in 2022 (compared to 41,365 in 2016).

Winning and losing municipalities

Among the municipalities which gained the most inhabitants, we find Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Ferney-Voltaire or even Ambérieu-en-Bugey.

On the other hand, Valserhone et saw their population growth decline slightly.

In 2022, the first will have 16,162 inhabitants (compared to 16,302 in 2016). The second records 22,378 inhabitants in 2022 (compared to 22,559 in 2016).

Finally, it should be noted that the agglomeration of Bourg-en-Bresse is the fifth largest population area in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes behind Lyon, , Saint-Étienne and Clermont-Ferrand.

Always more people in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Note that the population of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes continues to climb, while slowing down according to INSEE.

In 2022, the number of inhabitants amounts to 8.163.884 (compared to 7,916,889 in 2016).

Between 2016 and 2022, the region’s population growth is 41.000 habitants additional per year on average. A variation which is not as strong as between 2011 and 2016 (57,000 additional inhabitants).

She nevertheless remains the second most populous region in Francebehind Île-de-France (more than 12 million inhabitants).
