Apple’s affordable series may soon change its name. This revelation comes after more than two years of rumors regarding the fourth generation of the iPhone SE. The name change would mark a significant departure from Apple’s previous strategy, reminiscent of the approach taken with the iPhone 5c and iPhone XR.

The future iPhone would be named “iPhone 16e” according to information from Fixed Focus Digital. It should appear in spring 2025, and integrate components from the brand’s recent premium models. Alleged specs suggest a 6.1-inch screen, with the iPhone 16e finally ditching the compact 4.7-inch form factor of the current iPhone SE. Also gone is the Home button with Touch ID, to adopt a modern full-screen design.

The iPhone 16e is just around the corner

In terms of performance, the device would be equipped with the A18 chip, allowing support for Apple Intelligence. The camera would see a significant improvement with a 48-megapixel main sensor on the rearwhile the front camera would increase to 12 megapixels.

This strategic repositioning could allow Apple to better integrate its affordable model within its main range. Indeed, the iPhone 16 series already includes four models: iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. The addition of an “e” version would create marketing consistency while maintaining an attractive price positioning.

The current iPhone SE, marketed since 2022, is starting to show its limits in the face of the competition. Its dated design and limited functionality contrast with the expectations of today’s consumers. This name change could therefore mark a new departure for Apple’s affordable iPhone.

Although this information remains to be officially confirmed by Apple, this development is excellent news for its entry-level smartphone. The transition from “SE” to “16E” could thus symbolize the entry into a new era for affordable iPhones from the Apple brand.
