After the integration of ChatGPT into the Apple firm’s various devices – via its Apple Intelligence system – OpenAI announces a wave of updates for its flagship tool. Following its famous “advent calendar”, the company announced that the advanced voice mode of its chatbot now supports video and allows screen sharing.

From the ChatGPT mobile app, users can now share their video or screen for real-time conversations “without the need to describe their environment or upload photos”, promises OpenAI.

The solution is easy to use: just press the voice icon next to the chat bar. Once in voice mode, the user then taps the video icon at the bottom left to start the video. To share your screen, you must press the three-dot menu and select “Share screen”.

Europe, always last to benefit from innovation

This feature is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in most countries, as well as all Team users. Enterprise and Edu users should gain access in January. This update consolidates the company’s position as an essential everyday assistant. The tool, which recently exceeded 3 billion visits, is so successful that it beats all its competitors, with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude having difficulty breaking through to the general public, as evidenced by a recent survey by Statista.

Note that the company is not announcing a release date for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. The different European legislations all have the same effect on the technological giants: they gradually limit their services and choose to target other markets, considered more open.

ChatGPT becomes king of project management

OpenAI has, at the same time, announced the deployment of “Projects” in ChatGPT: a functionality allowing you to organize discussions sharing common topics or contexts. Concretely, these projects combine discussions, files and personalized instructions in a single “project”, allowing you to manage and revisit work in progress with all the key resources gathered in one place.

Examples include preparing for a monthly team meeting, planning an event, learning a new programming language, etc. The “Projects” service is available now for ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Team users worldwide from the web version, the ChatGPT desktop application for Windows, and on the mobile and macOS applications from the “+” icon in the left sidebar of the ChatGPT account.

OpenAI plans to expand access to Enterprise and Edu users in January. The company also says it will support more file types and connected apps like Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive, as well as the ability to choose other models, like o1, all in 2025.

Canvas, the code help interface that wants to overshadow the best

Finally, in this avalanche of announcements, OpenAI indicates that Canvas is exiting beta mode and becoming available for all levels of ChatGPT immediately, including the free version. This dedicated interface designed for working with ChatGPT on coding projects “that go beyond a simple conversation” is now capable of running Python code with the ability to nudge ChatGPT to suggest improvements and fix bugs.

OpenAI also specifies that Canvas is now integrated directly into GPT-4o, with users no longer needing to select it separately from the template drop-down menu. Likewise, users can directly import code into Canvas with a copy and paste option. Finally, for those who would work with custom GPTs, Canvas is now compatible. Other improvements should follow next year.

If the release of such a tool appears less popular than other OpenAI tools, notably Sora, the fact remains that such an interface proves essential in the shift taken by the company: it seeks to make itself indispensable in the daily lives of its users and targets other markets such as software development.
