The new HDMI standard, numbered 2.2, arrives next January. While it will bring many improvements, it will also require investment in new cables.
Plug in a TV decodera game console or a Blu-ray player to your TV using an HDMI cable. This is a gesture that you have probably done several times without even thinking about it. And yet, this video standard known to all is more complex than it seems. If we say “standard”, does that mean something to you? No ? So rather 1.4, 2.0, 2.1… These are the famous ones normes HDMI. More than a number, they determine, among other things, the image quality that you can get on your screens.
If you buy a HDMI cable today it will be stamped with the rules 2.1. This is the latest, validated in 2017 by the HDMI Forum consortium. The vast majority of recent devices, if not all, support it.
The gain compared to version 2.0 is much greater than its name suggests: flow rate up to 48 Gbps (18 for 2.0) and definition up to 10K/8K at 60 fps or 4K at 120 fps are on the program (compared to 4K at 60 fps in 2.0). Isn't that enough for you? So here is the HDMI 2.2.
The HDMI 2.2 standard arrives in January 2025 and it works with new cables
On the sidelines of CES in January 2025, the major Tech show in Las Vegas, the HDMI Forum announces that it will present “a new version of the HDMI specification“. The latter will be equipped “higher bandwidth” et “will allow a variety of resolutions and refresh rates” more important than currently.

No details to get your teeth into, however. Unsurprisingly, the group also indicates that HDMI 2.2 will require the use of a new cable. In reality, this shouldn't change much for you. It will take several years before devices compatible with the new standard are affordable to the majority. The first ones should arrive quickly that said. According to the latest rumors, Nvidia RTX 5000 graphics cards will support HDMI 2.2.
