DECRYPTION – Researchers at the École Polytechnique de Lausanne have managed to improve the walking of partially paralyzed patients using a technique already used for Parkinson's patients.
Climb a series of steps, without any assistance. This was until then an unattainable feat for Wolfgang Jäger. This 54-year-old patient has suffered from partial paralysis of both legs for sixteen years, after an incomplete spinal cord injury caused by an accident. With a lot of rehabilitation, he regained his walking ability which remained very limited. But the year 2022 marks the beginning of a second life for him, as well as for a second patient.
Both are fortunate to be able to join an exploratory study in Lausanne which aims to restore the abilities lost by deep brain stimulation (DBS). And the results are spectacular: « Now when I see a staircase with only a few steps, I can climb them alone, Raconte Wolfgang Jäger. It's an incredible feeling. »
