Sony is hungry and would like to take a bite of Kadokawa in order to get its juiciest fruits. But the group that owns From Software would have another idea in mind.

Entertainment in the broad sense

Last November 19, we learned thanks to Reuters that Sony Interactive Entertainment and Kadokawa Group, a Japanese company specializing in the production and publication of cross-media content, such as films, series but also video games, were discussing a potential takeover. The information was confirmed by the Kadokawa company itself, specifying that for the moment, nothing had yet been signed. For information, the Japanese company that interests Sony has in its gaming division a certain From Software, the creators of Dark Souls and Elden Ring, as well as Acquire (Tenchu, Octopath Traveler, Mario & Luigi: the brotherly epic) or Spike Chunsoft (Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero).

According to sources cited by Reuters, Sony would seek to fill its portfolio linked to entertainment in the broad senseKadokawa Corporation being a media conglomerate whose sector of activity includes the publication of manga, anime and of course video games. As often happens in these kinds of situations, Kadokawa's share price jumped following the Reuters publication, showing that the markets consider this takeover plausible.

Part or all?

Since this Reuters revelation, speculation has been rife, which has prompted Bloomberg to explore the subject. According to the site, Kadokawa and Sony have been in contact for many years and if no takeover has been possible until now, it is because the two groups would not have agreed on the share of the pie. According to Bloomberg, Sony would only be interested in investments in the intellectual properties of cartoons and video games, while Kadokawa would like the creators of the PlayStation to buy the entire entity.

Bloomberg also reveals that Microsoft and Tencent have also expressed interest in Kadokawa, but that the company would prefer to give the advantage to a Japanese company rather than a Chinese or American one.. In the paper, analysts note that this acquisition could be one of Sony's best acquisitions, but we still have to see what it could cost. While these stories of industry consolidation make headlines, Elden Ring's expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, is nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. We will have to wait until December 12, 2024 to see if this DLC will defeat its competitors.
