Canonical to offer 12 years of LTS for open source Docker images

Canonical is expanding its LTS offering beyond Ubuntu’s “deb” packages and is launching a new “distro-free” Docker image design and build service, with 12 years of security maintenance for any open source application or dependency, regardless of whether that software is already in use or not. packaged in Ubuntu or not.

The new “Everything LTS” offering expands Ubuntu Pro (free for up to 5 machines) with thousands of new upstream open source components, including the latest AI/ML dependencies and tools for machine learning, training, and inference. These will be maintained as source with Ubuntu instead of “deb” packages.

Ubuntu Pro subscriptions now include the right to run unlimited “Everything LTS” containers. VMware, RHEL, and public cloud hosts are supported at the same price as Ubuntu Pro hosts.

The vendor will build “distroless” Docker images to customer specifications, with upstream components not included in Ubuntu. It will patch critical CVEs within 24 hours, with support on RHEL, Ubuntu, VMware, or public cloud K8s for over 12 years.

Canonical’s commitment to maintaining CVE security for these open source components should thus facilitate compliance with regulatory frameworks such as FIPS, FedRAMP, EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), FCC US Cyber Trust Mark and DISA-STIG.
