While it was already controversial because of its price, the PS5 Pro could well pose more problems than expected, or even be worse than Sony's base console. In any case, this is what some players are saying about Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi Survivor, whose visual qualities are less good on PS5 Pro…

Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi Survivor would be uglier on PS5 Pro

Just a few weeks ago, Sony finally released its new mid-generation console. Announced as a way to reduce as much as possible the choice between Quality mode and Performance mode available on most current AAAs, the PS5 Pro theoretically attracted a lot of players if we put aside its exorbitant price. But now that the console is out, some returns are more than worrying. Indeed, some players have noticed that Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor were actually less beautiful on PS5 Pro than on PS5:

According to the testimony of this Reddit user, the Quality mode of Silent Hill 2 doesn't improve much and keeps the game at 30 frames per second, like on the original PS5. But even worse, it's when switching to Performance mode that the problems arise. Indeed, even if the game passes well at 60 frames per second, it does so at the cost ofhighly impacted visual qualityin particular by blurring effects and image jumps almost everywhere on the screen. A result far below the Performance mode of the normal PS5, especially for a game which should be one of the games improved by the new console.

On Star Wars Jedi : Survivorthe hardware experts from Digital Foundry noticed the same problem. Despite the update which should have made the game one of the titles improved by the PS5 Pro, the game is actually less pretty on this console than on the previous one, at least in Performance mode. The observation from Oliver Mackenzie from Digital Foundry is clear:

I would personally go so far as to say that it is much worse than the old performance mode.

The fault of PSSR according to experts, a flagship technology of the PS5 Pro

Still according to Digital Foundry, the problem of these two particular cases would be due to the famous PSSR. As a reminder, this new technology was one of the three major axes of the PS5 Pro on which it relied to obtain better performance than its big sister. In summary, it is a graphics upscaling technology similar to Nvidia's DLSS which allows the use of AI to artificially increase the number of pixels from a lower resolution. In theory, this should make it possible to display games in 4K or other demanding resolutions without requiring high-powered components that can be found in PCs costing several thousand euros.

In practice, even if the technology works on many games on PC (and very probably on PS5 Pro too), it seems to show its limits in certain games like Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Due to a lack of detail in certain scenes in these games, the AI has difficulty doing its job correctly, which causes these blurring or juddering effects. For the moment, players are especially very disappointed by the lack of communication from Sony or the developers of Silent Hill 2 et Star Wars Jedi : Survivor. In fact, no comments have yet been made to even reassure the players. It is currently impossible to know if the problem can be resolved by updating the games concerned or if it will be necessary to update the console.
