After two years of absence in this segment, Oppo is finally returning to the high end. The latest representative of the brand in premium lands is called Oppo Find X5 Pro, so we move directly to the Oppo Find X8 Pro.
Oppo’s situation in France
In the meantime, the Chinese brand has raised its photo game by marketing the first smartphone equipped with two periscopes. Oppo also took the opportunity to get a little closer to OnePlus internally, its sister brand. And this on many points such as the integration ofalert slider on this Oppo Find X8 Pro or even their interfaces which are very similar. The company also continued to market its smartphones in various European countries (Spain and Italy in particular), which allowed it to continue to develop its ColorOS interface.

Despite these good points, this sudden interruption in July 2023 has consequences. It forces the brand to regain a lot of lost ground. The Chinese giant was on the verge of conquering 4th place in the ranking of smartphone sellers, everything has to be redone, with much smaller teams and resources. We went from a French team of several dozen people internally to less than ten.
After these details, it’s now time for an in-depth handling of the smartphone that we were able to try before its official presentation. We will then expand this article to add the missing elements to a test worthy of the name: screen test, performance test, autonomy test, will follow.
Design and originalities
2024 has given pride of place to smartphone designs with flat edges and flat screens, iPhone style to put it quickly. Faced with this tidal wave, the Oppo Find X8 Pro appears refreshing with a slightly curved screen (although the edges have been largely flattened since the Oppo Find X5 Pro).
The smartphone benefits from very neat finishes, with a white and satin coating on the back for the model we are testing. Gone is the photo block molded into the ceramic back of the Find X5 Pro, hello the rounded photo block that is quite common for a Chinese brand. Too bad, Oppo loses a little of its character here. That being said, the arrangement of the glass and metal used is once again rather neat.
A trigger button and an alert slider
The Oppo Find Located on the left edge, it is simply a sliding button with three positions (silent, vibrate and ring).
More original, the Oppo Find X8 Pro also includes a shutter button for the camera. This does not mark any relief, so it is not at all annoying when handling.
After a double tap, it launches the camera app. A new press in it serves as a trigger, but that’s not all. You can also swipe left or right to zoom out or zoom in. A nice addition, even if the sensations are a little limited apart from haptic feedback, compared to a physical button that is pressed.
ColorOS: an excellent interface
The return of Oppo to France also marks the return of ColorOS. We left the interface in the middle of the absorption phase of OxygenOS, the OnePlus interface. The work now seems complete, it is simply impossible to distinguish the two without being an expert on the subject.
And we have to say that this is for the best. ColorOS is a stunningly fluid interface. No fuss either, the whole thing is very ergonomic and easy to use. If the manufacturer integrates some Oppo branded applications, these remain very optional. Most of the system applications rely on the Google suite which is very efficient.
This is also the case for most of the new AI products which remind us of the suite offered by Google and Samsung throughout the year. We find all the classics: Circle to search from Google is there, but also the classics like AI Eraser, a kind of magic eraser, an AI summary of notes, writing assistance, transcription in the audio recorder , etc.
A small originality in the field all the same, Oppo has added the possibility of erasing reflections in a shot. Useful for saving a photo, but it can also make it flatter in some cases.
Let’s end with two software features that we will modestly describe as inspirations from Apple. Like Dynamic Island on iOS, several system features can continue to appear around the punch at the top of the screen in a bubble. This is the case for a timer or for the lamp for example. The addition, without being vital, brings a little extra to the interface.
More surprisingly, the Touch to share functionality allows “One-tap wireless file sharing between iOS/iPadOS and ColorOS 15 devices using NFC.” We will try this feature during our test.
Performance: the first under Dimensity 9400
Under the hood, we have the new chip from MediaTek, the Dimensity 9400. It is quite simply the first smartphone on the French market to feature the high-end chip from the Taiwanese. It is helped by 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
If we won’t go into more detail in the full test, here is already a first idea of the performance on Geekbench 6.
SoC Geekbench 6 Single-Core Geekbench 6 Multi-Core Geekbench 6 Compute Score (GPU)
Oppo Find X8 Pro Mediatek Dimensity 9400
Asus Rog Phone 9 Pro Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3
Xiaomi 14T Pro Mediatek Dimensity 9300+
Apple iPhone 16 Pro Apple A18 Pro
From this first comparison, two first conclusions can be drawn. The Dimensity 9400 chip does not seem to break the ceiling in terms of CPU power. it is barely more powerful than the previous Dimensity 9300+. It’s even behind the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 in single-core, which is a bit disappointing since there’s supposed to be a generation gap between the two.
Compared to the new Snapdragon 8 Elite or Apple’s A18 Pro, it’s simply no match. The two chips are a category above the Dimensity 9400 and therefore the Oppo Find X8 Pro.
Photo quality: what to do
We will detail the model’s photo performance in more detail in our full test. Keep in mind that it integrates two X3 and X6 telephoto lenses, an ultra wide angle and a wide angle, or four photo modules. All are equipped with a 50 Mpx sensor, Oppo has not skimped.
While waiting for the full analysis, here are some photos taken with this smartphone.
Important clarification, the photo with a traffic sign is a test of X100 mode. Quite impressive at first glance.
