Google is reportedly working on a backup and restore system integrated into its messaging application.
You may soon be able to backup or restore conversations (and their media content) directly in the Android Google Messages app. In any case, this is what 9to5Google seems to have discovered after decompiling the APK of the latest beta of Google’s messaging application.
An integrated, end-to-end encrypted backup option
The code for the latest Google Message beta reveals several clues suggesting that Google is working on a backup and recovery solution integrated directly into the application. Several lines found in the application code actually refer to this new functionality, describing its operation in broad terms.
We can thus find a line indicating “ Backup is better with Messages. Restore your conversations, media and more anytime within the app. “. Two other lines indicate that “ Your backup will be end-to-end encrypted and secured by your lock screen » and that « Your conversations are automatically restored when you log in “. If nothing is confirmed yet, everything suggests that this application-specific backup system uses Google Drive storage space to store saved conversations and multimedia files.
With this new system directly integrated into Google Messages, managing the backup of conversations would be greatly simplified. Because currently, this is integrated into the overall backup of “other device data”, which can be found in Settings > System > Device backup.
This new feature will obviously remain optional and it will be perfectly possible to use Google Messages without backup. However, the conversations, which will not be saved, will be permanently deleted from your Google account. There would thus be no going back possible to recover them a posteriori.
Also note that if messages can be saved from the cellular network, it will obviously be possible to synchronize multimedia content (photos, videos, voice notes, etc.) only when your smartphone is connected to Wi-Fi.
Our colleagues atAndroid Authoritywho also looked into this new feature coming to the application, managed to activate it and got an overview of how it works.
