Test – Rage of the dragons NEO : l’art du tag-team fighting

Released in 2002 in arcades, Rage of the Dragons is one of those fighting games which did not achieve huge commercial success but which have acquired, over the years, the status of a cult game. The title is finally entitled to a release on consoles, in digital form.

Thanks to the publisher Qubyte, fans of fighting games can finally discover one of the most unknown titles of the 2000s. Released only in arcades in 2002, Rage of the dragons left its mark on the fighting games market . Extremely elitist, the title offers a different approach from other games by focusing everything on tag-fighting.

What is interesting about this game, compared to the multiple other ports of 2D fighting games on last generation consoles, is that Rage of the Dragons is one of the very rare titles to have never been entitled to a port on consoles. For many players, this will therefore be their first contact with the series. For fans, this digital version represents the first option to own the game.

Second point of interest: the game is entirely based on team combat. At any time, it is possible to change character, in which case the second fighter can rest and regain some energy. The clashes thus prove to be very technical and strategic. Even in easy mode, the game will give you a challenge, with a demanding combat system and extremely high difficulty. It is of course the tag fighting system which gives Rage of the Dragons all its richness, since it is possible to carry out devastating sequences with two characters and thus align the combos. Faced with such difficulty, beginners will undoubtedly feel lost, but rest assured, the game includes a very good tutorial, in addition to numerous offline game modes including the essential Arcade mode, but also a mode Survival. The real interest of the game is of course its multiplayer, both offline and online. And we must admit, the Qubyte studio has done a good job with excellent netcode, without any latency, lobbies and an effective matchmaking system. The problem is that unless you organize a meeting via a site, it is difficult to find players, largely because the game is not crossplay.

Regardless, this should not prevent fans of fighting games from leaning towards this excellent tag fighting game from the NeoGeo era. Of course, the game is deserted online, but if you have friends who play it, you will be able to find something to suit you. In addition, the title is offered at a very competitive price since you will only have to pay €19.50 to acquire it on the platform of your choice…

Conclusion

Among the rare 2D fighting game classics that have never been ported to consoles, Rage of the Dragons is an absolute must for the most demanding players. The title is characterized in addition to its extreme difficulty by a very technical combat system based on tag fighting (2 vs 2 fights). Solid in its gameplay, the game is especially interesting in local multiplayer – online if you have friends who play it but be careful, it’s difficult to face strangers, the servers being deserted… At €19.50, you In any case, you have no reason to miss this little nugget.
