PlayStation Portal: this new feature corrects the main flaw of the device

For a time, PlayStation Portal had a simple remote play role, the physical equivalent of PS Remote Play: its main purpose was to access the user's PS5 console, then relay the console image directly from the portable device. In other words, if you didn't have a PS5, the interest in PlayStation Portal became completely zero. Now today, the portable console ported to the cloud is equipped with a function which will make it much more interesting, including for players who do not own the latest generation of Sony consoles.

The PlayStation Portal gains interest with this simple addition

The manufacturer has in fact announced that cloud streaming is becoming available on PlayStation Portal (in beta for the moment). In other words, Sony now provides cloud access to more than 120 PS5 games with a resolution of up to 1080p (at 60 FPS). However, you will need to meet a certain number of conditions to benefit from it: firstly, you will need to have a PSN account, as well as a PS Plus Premium subscription. On the other hand, to establish a connection to the cloud service and thus play games, it is necessary to have a sufficient internet connection (7 MB/s for 720p, 13 MB/s for 1080p).

To join the beta, it is necessary to perform a software update of the PlayStation Portal, then go to the settings and activate the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” option. On the home screen of your console, you will have access to a new option allowing you to access cloud streaming. Currently, only PS5 games are available for streaming via this option (PS3/PS4 games are not compatible). Regardless, this new feature corrects the biggest flaw of the PlayStation Portal: from now on, it is no longer necessary to own a PS5 in order to benefit from it: the console can be independent, and rely solely on its service cloud streaming.
