Sony finally corrects the main flaw of its portable console

Sony is expanding PlayStation Portal features with a major update. From now on, the Japanese giant’s accessory can stream PS5 games from the cloudin addition to its local streaming option via Wi-Fi. Accessible in beta, this new feature is reserved for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers in several countries.

PlayStation Portal moves to Cloud Gaming

Sony is rolling out an update that allows PlayStation Portal to access the streaming via le cloud for “more than 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus games catalog”. We’re talking about flagship games like Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Until now limited to the distribution of games installed on the console via Wi-Fi, the PS Portal can now rely on the PlayStation Plus library.

To enjoy streaming in 720p, Sony recommends a connection of at least 7 Mb/s, while a speed of 13 Mb/s is necessary to play in 1080p (up to 60 fps). Some elements remain missing from this beta: game trials, group voice chat, invitations for certain titles, 3D audio and in-app purchase features. Additionally, PS4 and PS3 games as well as child accounts are not compatible with cloud streaming on the Portal.

Gradual deployment in several countries

The beta version will soon be available in 30 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, United States, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Romania, United Kingdom, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. An offer that positions itself against Xbox Cloud Gaming (still in beta) for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.

In addition to streaming, the update brings audio improvements to PlayStation Portal. Users can now fine-tune volume, with a lower minimum threshold, and configure PlayStation Link devices directly from their Portal settings. New features that give a whole new dimension to the PlayStation Portable, which thus becomes a portable console dedicated to cloud gaming, and more simply a luxury accessory for PS5 owners.
