iOS/Android: messaging compatibility will not be complete

With iOS 18, Apple finally takes the RCS step, making its instant messaging compatible with the Android equivalent.

The European Union has won its standoff with Apple. With iOS 18, the Californian giant is obliged to make its messaging compatible with RCS, or “SMS 2.0”. The Californian company has always done everything to make its messaging incompatible with other messaging services. But all that will change with iOS 18.

According to initial feedback, compatibility between the two messaging systems will not be complete. Most functions should work, but there are a few oddities to note. No acknowledgments of receipt in group conversations, no “reaction” to messages, no end-to-end encryption of messages either. At least for the moment. While it is of course not impossible for Apple to correct these small defects over the course of updates, it will initially be necessary to count on a few incompatibilities.

That doesn’t stop this from being great news for consumers. Because finally, it will be possible to send files, images, videos to friends via iMessage or Messages without having to use the paid MMS format. This is the strength of RCS, which presents itself as an “enriched” SMS.
