Normal cycle or acceleration?
The Earth has already gone through glacial and interglacial periods, that’s a fact. But scientists are clear: our activities are warming the planet.
Natural warmings take much longer. The one we are currently experiencing is ten times faster than what we observe in geological cycles
previous ones! Furthermore, levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are now reaching unprecedented heights. And it is no coincidence that this
acceleration coincides with the beginning of the industrial era.
The Earth cannot absorb the excess Co2
Indeed, our human activities emit a surplus of greenhouse gases. Today, our natural carbon sinks — forests, soils, oceans — are doing their best,
but they are overwhelmed. Since their capacity is exceeded, the gases accumulate in the atmosphere.
Result: we are seeing an increase in heatwaves, storms and other extreme weather events. Concrete examples of global warming.
Technologies to create artificial carbon sinks are in development. But they are still far from being ready on a large scale. Furthermore, we do not know
always all the effects of artificial solutions and the chain consequences that they could cause.
The only alternative of which we are certain is to move towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is all the more important because, once in the atmosphere, these gases remain trapped for decades, even centuries. CO2, for example, can remain for more than 100 years!
