Since the big June update, Starfield has integrated official mod management. But Bethesda’s methods make people cringe.

Sunday June 9, at the end of the Xbox Showcase conference, Bethesda announced that it was making the Creation Kit available to players. Starfieldwhich allows players to create their mods – more or less important and unofficial modifications of the game. But the publisher mainly makes them pay for real money.

The players have realized this and it is not happening. In the “Creation” tab of Starfieldappeared with the June update, we can now download and install mods more easily to, for example, benefit from various quality of life improvements without having to go through a third-party site (like NexusMods), nor through the files of the game.

“Paid” mods, really?

On paper, the principle is enough to please. But in practice, Bethesda took the opportunity to offer paid elements. However, contrary to what you can read on social networks, it is not the mods that are paid for.

In reality, the Creation tab includes both unofficial mods available for free as well as downloadable content providing, for example, character skins, ships, places of residence and adventure companions, as well as quests to complete. We can find the method questionable, especially since the publisher was careful not to inform the players in advance, but the precision is considerable.

Starfield Mods – Tech&Co

Paid DLC creators include Bethesda, the studio behind Starfield, as well as “official” creators, identified as a blue check mark.

These people are then free to set the prices of their creations, which vary from 100 to several thousand “creation credits”. These credits, in fact, are available for a fee, ranging from 9.99 euros for 1000 creation credits, to 24.99 euros for 2700 creation credits.

Note that owners of the Premium edition of Starfield benefit from 1000 free creation credits – in addition to the extension Shattered Spaceplanned for the fall.

The differentiation between mods and DLC is not clear, Starfield is currently the subject of a “review bombing” campaign, where players are using Steam reviews to criticize Bethesda’s decision, which has not commented on the subject. At the time of writing, reviews point to a “rather negative” average with only 28% positive.
