Perhaps the biggest feature is the lack of features.

Intel and AMD have confirmed that Copilot+ features will not be available on their devices when the platform launches next week. Currently, only Qualcomm Snapdragon X laptops, scheduled for a June 18 launch, will support these new features. Competitors who have already demonstrated their next-generation mobile platforms, which support similar or faster AI inference performance, will not support these features at launch but will receive an update later.

Copilot+ features include technologies such as Auto Super Resolution, which increases refresh rates in games by dynamically adjusting the screen resolution and using advanced enlargement algorithms equipped by the built-in neural processing unit. This feature will only be available on the Qualcomm X series when it launches next week.

Support for Microsoft Copilot+ features:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon: at launch (June 18)
  • AMD Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point”: available via post-launch update (July)
  • Intel Core Ultra 200V “Lunar Lake”: available via post-launch update (Q3’24)

Another function is Reminder, Microsoft’s tool that periodically takes screenshots and allows users to consult the generative AI’s memory to find and retrieve information instantly. However, security researchers have shown that this feature poses significant security concerns due to the ease with which it can be accessed. Microsoft has now confirmed that this feature is postponed and will not be available at launch.

Other features that the Intel and AMD platforms will miss at launch are Restyle Image And Cocreator. The first is an AI-powered feature that allows users to change the style of an image based on pre-trained models (like different art styles). The second is a drawing feature that allows users to turn simple sketches into works of art. It is worth noting that image generation software is readily available through third-party software or online tools at this point.

Microsoft:

“Intel Lunar Lake and AMD Strix PCs are Windows 11 AI PCs that meet the Copilot+ PC hardware requirements. We are working closely with Intel and AMD to deliver Copilot+ PC experiences through free updates, when available,” — James Howell, Microsoft

Intel:

“Lunar Lake will benefit from Copilot+ experiences via an update when available,” — Thomas Hannaford, Intel

AMD:

“We plan to have Copilot+ experiences by the end of 2024” — Matthew Hurwitz, AMD

Speaking of third-party software, although official Microsoft features are not available, there are software that use NPUs, such as Adobe, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut. These should work independently of Microsoft Copilot+ certification, as they connect directly to the NPU.
