A few years later, the brand expanded its catalog to smartphones and added two new pairs of headphones: the Nothing Ear and the Nothing Ear (a). A lighter version that copies the look of the Ear II
It’s difficult to distinguish the Nothing Ear (a) from the more high-end model, the Nothing Ear (2024). They look exactly the same, except for the colors, where the affordable version adds a dapper yellow color. They share the same form factor extended by a short stem with a pinch control area. The Ear (a) comes to fit the inside of the ear without difficulty and then does not move. Sports practice is therefore possible, especially since they fear neither perspiration nor bad weather. As for long listening sessions, the earbuds don’t cause any discomfort either.
We appreciate the original look, with the transparency of their stem, which allows the electronic components to be seen. The case that houses the headphones is more compact and less thick than that of the Ear. However, it lacks wireless charging compatibility and you will have to make do with its USB-C port, located on the rear edge. The case recharges the headphones in around 1 hour 30 minutes, but they get 1 hour of listening time back after just 10 minutes of charging. As for the autonomy of the headphones, they last 5 hours 20 minutes, which is quite respectable.
An audio score that impresses
The model a seems to have inherited the same ANC system as the Ear. Good news, because it is very good and competes with the best in the category. Overall, bass noises around the listener are effectively attenuated and active noise reduction impacts even clearer sounds. The transparency mode, which allows you to hear around you and hold a conversation (music paused), does the trick.
The big difference between the Nothing Ear (a) headphones and the Ear headphones is the type of transducer that powers them. The Nothing Ear (a) are equipped with thermoplastic polyurethane transducers versus ceramic for the Ear itself. They are therefore less well equipped than the latter in terms of acoustics. However, the tonal signature of the two models is very close, with a powerful and deep bass, lots of dynamism and precision. They offer a very catchy sound, which flatters the ear with great detail. They slightly lack ventilation in the high frequencies, but the voices are better embodied. For this price, we can say that they are very recommendable.
