AMD X870 and X870E: no launch planned with the Ryzen 9000

AMD recently presented its new Ryzen 9000 processors which were well received thanks to a notable improvement in the CPI. However, it has been revealed that motherboards X870 and X870Edesigned for these new processors, will not be available at launch. This decision raises questions about the reasons and implications of this delay. However, don’t panic, we remind you that AMD Series 600 cards will be compatible with the new processors, subject to a BIOS update.

During the Computex 2024, most manufacturers presented LGA1851 motherboards for Intel’s Arrow Lake-S processors while new motherboards from AMD were becoming a little rarer despite the announcement of Zen 5 processors. According to discussions with various manufacturers, it appears that the new X870 and X870E chipsets do not provide enough innovation to warrant immediate priority. Current motherboards, after a BIOS update, are sufficient to support the new Ryzen 9000.

AMD seems to want to avoid past mistakes by first prioritizing BIOS updates to ensure complete stability on existing motherboards before introducing new chipsets. This approach helps ensure that users of the new Ryzen 9000s will immediately have a wide range of compatible motherboards available, providing reliable support from the start.

The new Ryzen 9000 processors will allow the use of DDR5-8000 memories with EXPO. However, this does not only depend on the chipset, but also on the design of the motherboard and the IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) of the processors. Manufacturers emphasize that high-quality motherboards, even among existing models, will be able to support these memory speeds thanks to the improvements brought by AMD’s new IMC.
