AI arrives in force on the iPhone

In just two weeks, Apple will present its new systems, with – a priori – a major overhaul for iOS 18 integrating AI-powered functions.

AI is coming to the iPhone in force!

After many mysteries about Apple’s exact advances in AI, Tim Cook promised revelations for this year ! Also many are looking forward to WWDC, which will take place in two weeks. Cupertino could take a multi-stage approach, some AI requests would be processed locally and others via the Cloud (not right away).

So Siri should benefit from nice improvements : even if it would not be a conversational chatbot, it would be much more responsive and capable of responding accurately to its interlocutor. According to Mark Gurman, it would be equipped with features to help users in their daily lives, in an approach referred to as proactive intelligence.

Messages would also get a serious boost, with the possibility of suggesting new personalized emojis, in relation to the content of the SMS. Which would also mean an even bigger emoji library.

Apple will also allow users Even More Freedom in iPhone Home Screen Changes (already the last ones took time to configure). In his latest newsletter, Mark Gurman also mentions the ability to change application icons (but this point is not very clear). For example, users could replace the X icon’s black color with Twitter’s blue, or any color. The benefit would perhaps be to be able to classify apps by color (green for banking, blue for weather, black for networks, etc.)

Other AI-related changes!

Still according to Mark Gurman, native applications should also be entitled to their revolution : Emails, Photos, Safari, Siri, Voice Memos, Notes or even Fitness. Many of them should benefit from a boost, with or without AI. The interface would thus display a simpler and more modular design. Some would even say closer to that of visionOS.

Recently, there was talk of a mathematical integration with Notes (to solve equations) and an option to record vocals. A priori, Apple is reportedly testing a significantly improved version of the Calculator app. The latter would have the little code name GreyParrotin reference to the Gabonese Gray Parrot, renowned for its intelligence and cognitive abilities.

Among the new features envisaged, we could notably have a side menu including a history of operations, but also a improved conversion system and integrated into the main interface, with options dedicated to up-to-date exchange rates or perhaps different metric systems. Finally another addition: the possibility of adjusting the size of the window in existing presentations, with configurable buttons (size and shape). This new version would also be available on iOS 18, but also iPadOS 18!

Apple would like to new AI features for Apple Music (to automatically generate playlists), or Pages, Keynote and Numbers (to create summaries, create content, etc.). Apple has also given itself a new domain name: iwork.ai. The latter could be a herald of a new platform, especially since Cupertino has also acquired 32 firms specializing in AI in 2023. Enough to boost your internal teams!

Xcode would not be left out with the possibility of creating blocks of code automatically or testing applications. According to Mark Gurman, Apple’s new system would be similar to Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot. He will use artificial intelligence to predict and complete blocks of code with the aim of simplifying the work required for software development. The firm would also explore how to use AI to generate code to test applications.

THE searches via Spotlight would receive generative AI and the ability to perform more complex tasks. We could also get coaching in Health and on the Apple Watch. But iOS 18 would thus plan to integrate large language models, in order toautomate complex taskswhich would mean greater integration with the Shortcuts app.

By digging into the beta code, developer Nicolás Álvarez discovered references to Safari browsing assistanta navigation assistant unknown to the battalion. At this point, it’s all speculation. But there is no doubt that the additions linked to AI will be numerous and Safari should not be forgotten, especially since other iOS browsers already integrate AI. We obviously think of Microsoft Edge supported by Copilot (powered by GPT-4).

Furthermore, Nicolás Álvarez also found a feature called Encrypted visual searchwhich would also use the Relai Privé infrastructure. Here too, we do not really have any information on this tool. We can also imagine a refined search (for example to better identify objects in photos) or an improved one for the Vision Pro.
