“There will be a before and an after”. This is how we could summarize the video that Digital Foundry has just published about Ninja Theory’s new creation available on PC and Xbox Series X|S.

“A new standard” in the world of video games

In our review of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, we explained from the first sentences that the title published by Microsoft swept aside everything that had already been done graphically. “The visuals crush everything we’ve seen so far, to the point where you sometimes don’t know what’s playable and what’s not. On a few occasions we thought that sequences were just CGI cutscenes, before realizing that we had to push the stick to move forward.” we wrote, over here.

Until now, it was just an impression, a feeling. However, tech experts at Digital Foundry have just released a Hellblade 2 review video. The observation is simple: according to them, the Ninja Theory software represents “a watershed moment in the evolution of real-time visuals. With trailer/final game comparisons that show how the British studio didn’t lie about the merchandise, when everyone thought it would be too good to be true.

“Stunning”

Digital Foundry starts its analysis strong by describing Hellblade 2 as a game technically above all others. Of course, what is immediately impressive is the depiction of the characters. Not just Senua, but her allies as well, as well as her enemies. Digital Foundry explains that the rendering sets a new standard in the industry, which gives the impression, during certain sequences, of finding yourself in front of real sequences filmed with real actors. Just that ! The site says that we are easily at the level of the Matrix’s Unreal Engine 5 demo, that Uncanny Valley is non-existent, and that the level of detail is so “amazing” which one might think is in front of the CGI. It’s “superb” and “almost perfect”, we hear. Both day and night scenes feature impressive real-time natural lighting, which Digital Foundry demonstrates with a long explanatory section dedicated to special effects and environmental modeling. All with 30fps “solid rock”, without any drop in framerate, on Xbox Series X.

The analysis video which lasts more than thirty minutes can therefore be summed up by the fact that Hellblade 2 is the most beautiful game of all time, and that he will leave a mark through his mastery of Unreal Engine 5. Digital Foundry obviously specifies that it is a narrative, corridor game, and that it is therefore simpler to achieve this rendered compared to an open world. However, the “next-gen” offers (finally) a big graphic slap.
