Truecaller’s idea for filtering phone calls: AI with users’ voices
Truecaller is one of the most popular apps for identifying and blocking unwanted calls on Android and iPhone, and now it’s announcing the arrival of a new feature thanks to a new partnership with Microsoft: an AI assistant that answers phone calls with your voice. user. As announced by the company, now thanks to a collaboration with Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech, the Truecaller assistant is able to learn from a clip recorded with your voice. For those who don’t remember, Truecaller launched its assistant in 2022, but only in a few selected countries (Australia, Canada, Chile, Israel, United States, South Africa and Sweden). Until now, you could choose from several preset voices, but now a higher level of customization has been introduced. Azure AI Speech was revealed at last Tuesday’s Build conference and has a personal voice feature that allows users to record and play back voices. However, Microsoft says Personal Voice is available on a limited basis and only for specific use cases such as voice assistants. Microsoft says it automatically adds watermarks to voices generated by Azure AI Speech Personal Voice and has also published a code of conduct that requires users to obtain full consent from those registered and prohibits impersonation. This way, when you receive a phone call, although it presents itself as the digital version of the user, it will have its voice and will be able to filter the calls.

According to the company, this novelty is able not only to add “a touch of familiarity and comfort for users”, but also shows “the power of AI to transform the way we interact with digital assistants”, according to Truecaller product director and general manager Raphael Mimoun. As you can see from the teaser clip, Truecaller’s AI assistant monitors incoming calls and lets users know why they’re calling. Users can see the reason for the call on their phone and choose how to answer, even asking their assistant to do so. Setting up the voice is very simple. As you can see in the video below, the process is simple and safe. Just go to the entries section, read and agree to the terms of use. Subsequently, a sentence of consent to use the service must be registered, followed by a unique AI training document. At this point, Azure AI Speech will process the voice and create a digital replica that will be used by the Truecaller assistant. When the user receives a phone call, the digital assistant answers for them and generates a transcription on the phone. We remind you that obviously the function will only be active in countries where the assistant is present.
