what is this intriguing notification about your personal data?

Meta has sent a notification to many of its Facebook users and should do so for Instagram as well. It informs you that the company plans to use your information to train its AI. However, it is possible to object to this.

Many Facebook users received a notification overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, titled “We are planning new AI features for you. » If the object seems harmless, it is important to read the accompanying message carefully. The notification in question informs you that Meta will use your data next month to train its artificial intelligence.

Use your information to develop and improve Meta’s AI»

Meta’s message is almost cynical about European data protection regulations: “we will now rely on the legal basis of our legitimate interests to use your information to develop and improve Meta’s AI“.

Part of what Meta is referring to is the end of combining data from multiple sources. Clearly, Meta can no longer combine your data from Facebook and Instagram without asking you for permission. This is due to the entry into force of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a new European legislation which causes changes for Meta.

Except that to avoid this, Meta has been offering for several months a subscription at 9.99 euros per month, which removes this combination of data, in addition to removing all advertising on the two social networks. For this, it relies on case law from the Court of Justice of the European Union. However, the European Commission is on guard and is currently investigating the legal basis of this subscription.

Three types of data will be used: posts, photos and their captions, as well as your conversations with the company’s AI. Meta has explicitly stated that your private messages and post comments will not be used.

Furthermore, the firm specifies that if you appear in an image shared on Instagram or Facebook or if you are mentioned in publications or captions, Meta may use your data. The opposition does not operate on individuals, but on accounts. Meta will begin using data for its AIs from June 26, when its privacy policy will be modified.

How can you object to the use of your data for Meta AI?

Meta offers a form to fill out to object to the way your information is used. Please note, if this objection is not sufficiently justified, it may be rejected. In this form, you must complete (while logged into your account):

  • Country of Residence ;
  • Mail address
  • Explain “the impact of this treatment on you“.

Frandroidwas able to test the form by following a fairly simple method for the third step. We followed the advice of an Internet user (@JhonnyBeeGoode) on X/Twitter, and entered the URL address of the CNIL in the field concerning “the impact of this treatment»: https://www.cnil.fr/fr.

We can confirm it: this is enough for Meta to agree to no longer use your data to train its AI, the company will indeed send a confirmation email immediately. Remember that the CNIL is the National Commission responsible for respecting personal data on the Internet (and the GDPR in particular).

Meta still has big plans for artificial intelligence

In fact, and this is indicated from the start in the famous notification, Meta is preparing to expand its AI functions in the European Union. This includes generative AI features, including AI image creation as well as Meta AI, Mark Zuckerberg’s company ChatGPT, which is coming everywhere. We can expect other tools to appear in Europe, as Meta develops many large language models (LLM).
