After the success of Mario Maker, passionate fans created Mario Builder 64, a tool allowing you to design your own 3D levels in the Super Mario 64 universe!

Since the phenomenal success of Super Mario Maker, Nintendo fans have continued to dream of a 3D version of the level creator. This wish came true thanks to the initiative of passionate modders who created Mario Builder 64, a tool allowing you to design your own levels in the Super Mario 64 universe. Unlike Nintendo games which allow you to create 2D courses, Mario Builder 64 offers a 3D experience, exploiting the iconic settings and enemies of the original title.

Mario Builder 64 has been released. A lot of time and effort went into this project and I couldn’t be happier to share it with you all. Have fun!

A creative and engaged community

Mario Builder 64, designed to run on PC, uses open Source code to recreate the Super Mario 64 universe. It allows users to create 3D levels with an intuitive interface, selecting from a wide range of platform elements and environmental themes. Users can perform a variety of experiences, from floating obstacle courses in the sky to more open, exploratory worlds. Creations can then be shared online, allowing other players to discover and try them. This possibility of sharing enriches the gaming experience, by offering an infinite diversity of levels created by the community.

Creation interface

The community was quick to grab hold of Mario Builder 64, creating and sharing innovative and often wacky designs. These include red coin challenges, boss fights, exploration-focused levels, and even courses designed specifically for speed runs! Some creations stand out for their complexity and ingenuity, while others take a more humorous approach, like levels filled with dozens of Bowsers in a giant swimming pool.

An uncertain but promising future

One of the most impressive aspects of Mario Builder 64 is its ability to feel like an official Nintendo product. The level of finish and the fluidity of the tool are such that one could believe that it is an official extension of the original game. Additionally, it includes new content that was not present in the 1997 game, allowing creators to innovate and add new gameplay elements to their creations.

Although Mario Builder 64 represents a dramatic step forward in game creation, its future remains uncertain. Nintendo is well known for its strict intellectual property policy and may not tolerate the existence of such an unofficial tool for long. However, the enthusiasm generated by Mario Builder 64 could push the Japanese giant to consider the development of an official version, perhaps a 3D extension for a future console like the Switch 2…
