what are the alternatives?

Google had warned that many extensions are now incompatible with Chrome, including the very popular uBlock Origin. But all is not lost for those allergic to advertising.

The dreaded date has arrived. For many users, the uBlock Origin extension used by almost 40 million Internet users is no longer installable on Google Chrome. The transition to Manifest V3, planned for a long time by Google, will have taken over the famous add-on to block advertisements on the Web.

The new rules imposed by Google on Chrome extension developers limit the ad blocking methods used by uBlock Origin. Result, on the Chrome Web Store page, the button “ Add to Google Chrome » is grayed out and a small message is displayed indicating that “This extension is no longer available because it does not follow best practices for Chrome extensions. »

Find an alternative extension

It seems that the limitation has not yet affected all users, but on our test machine, the extension is indeed blocked. Fortunately, for those allergic to pop-ups and other forms of intrusive advertising, there are solutions.

On many Chrome installations, it is no longer possible to use uBlock Origin // Source: Corentin Béchade for Frandroid

From the Chrome Extensions menu (chrome://extensions/) it is possible to find alternatives to the well-known extension by simply clicking on the “Find a replacement» which should appear at the top of the window. You will then be sent to a page in the Chrome Web Store listing add-ons compatible with Manifest V3, including uBlock Origin Lite which attempts to fulfill the same mission as its big brother.

Change browser

You can also switch to Firefox if you wish. Since the Mozilla Foundation’s browser is not dependent on Google’s moods regarding its add-on catalog, the uBlock Origin extension still works very well and can be installed without problem. You will also have the satisfaction of switching to free software published by a non-profit organization.

Other browsers based on the Chrome engine can also continue to use uBlock Origin thanks to small modifications made to the software code. Among them, we can cite the now famous Brave browser which also natively includes an ad blocker if you want to have belts and suspenders.

Many solutions are therefore available despite the disappearance of uBlock Origin on Chrome. If you do not want to change browser, you will however have to tolerate slightly reduced blocking performance since uBlock Origin Lite and other Chrome add-ons are limited by the new Manifest V3 rules.
