THE carscars modern are already riddled with sensorssensorsbut they could soon integrate others. To better adapt driving to the road, the best place to obtain data is directly from the tire. In any case, this is the bet of Pirelli and Bosch who have just announced a partnership to integrate the Cyber Tyre from Pirelli with software solutions and driving functions from Bosch.
Pirelli had already announced that it was working on a 5G version of its Cyber Tyre in 2019, but this project no longer seems relevant for the moment. Instead, the manufacturer opted for a version that communicates with technology Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), a very low consumption version of Bluetooth.

More data for optimized driving
Each tire would be equipped with sensors and send real-time data to the car’s on-board computer. This would allow the anti-lock wheel system to be adapted, or ABSABSin order to optimize braking. The car could also better adjust its electronic trajectory correction, or ESP, as well as the traction control system, or TCS, to limit wheel spin. According to Pirelli, this would increase safety, optimize performance and even increase driving pleasure. Additionally, it could have an ecological benefit by reducing tire wear, a big source of pollution.
The two manufacturers have not indicated when these tires are likely to arrive on the market. However, they announced that they had already equipped a Pagani Utopia Roadster with Pirelli Cyber Tyre connected to a applicationapplication ESP developed by Bosch. The next step will be to integrate the electromechanical microsystemselectromechanical microsystems (MEMS) from Bosch in new tires.
