Head of PASTEF’s list for the legislative elections on November 17, Ousmane Sonko is facing a challenge to his candidacy from an opposition coalition.
The Takku Wallu Senegal coalition (TWS, Together to Save Senegal), of which Macky Sall, former president of Senegal is the head of the list, has filed an appeal with the Constitutional Council against Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF coalition, with a view to early legislative elections scheduled for November 17, 2024.
This coalition, which brings together the former ruling party, the Alliance for the Republic (Apr) and the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), which supported Bassirou Diomaye Faye during the last presidential election, believes that Ousmane Sonko is ineligible in due to his six-month suspended sentence for defamation and for “state of contumacy”.
On October 7, 2024, Me Antoine Mbengue, lawyer for TWS, submitted this complaint, registered under number 67/E/24, accompanied by two documents: Order No. 024785 of October 7, 2024, which publishes the declarations of candidacy , and the list of PASTEF candidates for the proportional vote.
The Constitutional Council will have to examine this appeal before the elections.
PASTEF has not yet reacted to this appeal against its leader, also Prime Minister of Senegal.
Earlier, the Ministry of the Interior validated 41 lists of candidates for this election, while several candidates were declared inadmissible, as were certain TWS candidates for non-compliance with quotas.
On September 12, President Faye dissolved the National Assembly, calling for new elections to elect new ddeputies.
