“I’m thinking of giving my 2011 Toyota RAV4 to my son who will soon need a vehicle. To replace the RAV4, I was thinking of opting for the Toyota RAV4 Trail where the Honda Passport. What vehicle do you suggest? I will use it, among other things, to go to outfitters. » — Philippe
Answer
Hello Philippe,
The Honda Passport and the Toyota RAV4 do not compete in the same category. The Honda Passport is considered a two-row midsize SUV while the Toyota RAV4 is more of a compact SUV. You will notice the difference mainly in the size of the vehicle, with the Honda Passport being the largest. In both cases, the style approach on board is aging, with multimedia interfaces whose size is no longer in line with what is best in the segment.
The Honda Passport is also the one that will offer more performance. The power and smoothness of its 3.5-liter V6 engine will be your allies in everyday driving, surpassing what the Toyota RAV4 can offer you in this regard.
However, where the two vehicles come close is in terms of all-wheel drive. They both feature responsive drivetrain that promotes traction, sending power to the rear when needed. Both feature a lateral torque distribution rear differential, which can send power to the left or right depending on various settings. This is an addition to the Trail version compared to other versions of the RAV4, to improve crossing capabilities in more difficult situations. However, between the two, the Honda will have a slight advantage due to its more efficient system.
However, you should know that these two vehicles will not be sold at the same price. The Toyota RAV4 Trail retails for just over $40,000, while the least equipped, and therefore hardest to obtain, version of the Passport starts at $48,000. The Honda therefore offers you more performance and more space, but everything comes with an increased bill.
The advantage goes to the Honda
Still, I think if you can afford the extra expense, the Honda Passport is worth it. Its increased power and the competence of its all-wheel drive are downright assets, particularly if you travel through forests. Additionally, if you tow, the mechanics and chassis will be more comfortable in difficult conditions. The price is higher, sure, but the extra performance is worth it.
Finally, you will have to be patient to obtain a Honda Passport. The manufacturer delivers very few to our market. I therefore recommend that you contact a dealership now to find out delivery times, so as not to be taken by surprise when you are ready to pass on your current Toyota RAV4 to your son.
